Second Chance Foundation

The Second Chance Home Foundation
The Mission, Vision, and Purpose of the Second Chance Foundation and Second Chance Homes comes from the book of Revelation:

Chapter 21:4 “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain for the former things have passed away.”

This chapter and verse is the essence, core, and foundation for The Second Chance Home. These homes will bring love, safety, security, and hope for both children and adults dealing with the issue of HIV/AIDS. The Second Chance Home will become an “extended family” that empowers and brings stability to its residents. The Second Chance Home will teach children and adults to respect all life and to honor the blessings that God has bestowed upon them. The Second Chance Home will be a refuge, haven, and a place where everything that is good will shine through. No one or nothing will be taken for granted. Many times a second chance is all someone needs and God is a God of many chances. The “extended family” of The Second Chance Home will help to build the future leaders of tomorrow. Humility, compassion, and developing a positive attitude will be the tools that the family of The Second Chance Home will take with them for the rest of their lives.

The Second Chance Homes will provide housing for 12 children and/or adults. The number 12 represents the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 Disciples of Christ. Second Chance Homes will provide housing and assistance for children who have lost their parents, family, and/or caregiver from HIV/AIDS. Second Chance Homes will provide housing and assistance for adults who have HIV/AIDS, no family, or any place to live. Second Chance Homes will also become AIDS hospices as some will succumb to this disease. Second Chance Homes will always involve some aspect of HIV/AIDS. Whether it is a child left orphaned, a man or woman who has no where to live, or someone who is ill and needs comfort and care until the very end, each home will be established and set up accordingly to accommodate their needs. The strictest guidelines will be maintained but the atmosphere will be of one family united to help each other, love each other, and work together as a family unit.

The age range for the children’s Second Chance Home will be from birth to 12 years of age. The teenage Second Chance Home will be ages 13-19. The adult Second Chance Home will be for adults. Men and women will be able to live together because a family doesn’t exclude anyone. The Second Chance Hospice will provide services and care for those who have no primary caregiver. This is a time when privacy, dignity, and respect should be of the utmost priority. The Second Chance concept is simple, uncomplicated, and will not get bogged down in doctrine, ego, or mismanagement. These will be homes where love and working together unified as a team and family will prevail at all times.

The Second Chance Homes can vary in size but must accommodate 12 residents. A house with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, living room, dining room, den, kitchen with or/without a separate eating area is important. The two or three car garage can be turned into the office and living quarters for the staff. There will be a house manager and assistant living there who are qualified and certified to handle a residence such as this. Bedrooms can be set up with cribs, bunk beds, day beds, and/or full, twin and etc. Each room will have light, lots of light, a fan, a television, radio, and any other necessities that make the room “their room.” The den could be made into a computer, media, and multi game room. Bathrooms will be built to accommodate any one who is handicapped and challenged. No detail will be overlooked.

Prayer, community speakers, and other people involved with Second Chance Homes will be able to enjoy the living room area as it will be set up for counseling, meetings, visits, and other events that will take place in these homes. The dining room will be set up for meals as well as entertaining friends and guests. Music will be an important component of the homes. Piano, guitar, and additional musical instruments will be available. Music lessons, singing, writing, arts and crafts classes, and other talents and skills will be incorporated into The Second Chance Home “family”.

The residents will all share in the cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, maintenance of the home, and will be responsible for their own rooms. There will be sufficient time for group activities, meals will be together, grace said, and “lights out” will be according to whatever conditions and situations arise. On call at all times will be the spiritual advisor, a medical doctor, computer technician/media/electrician/plumber and any other personnel that The Second Chance Home staff feels necessary in order to accomplish the “families” growth. A Second Chance Home van will be available at all times to take residents to the doctor, appointments, shopping, and church. Though individual cars will be available, it is important that one vehicle be used specifically for the sole purpose of transporting residents. Scheduling of outside activities will be strict because working together as a family and team requires excellent communication.

The backyard will have an appropriate playground, an above or below ground pool depending upon the facility, and an exercise area with fitness/gym equipment according to the homes and residents’ requirements. There will be music and pet therapy. Incorporated on a regular basis will be message therapy, prayer, healing services, and any other holistic approach available that will bring out the optimum spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical well-being of the “family.” Children will be schooled in house or attend school. They will be transported, supervised, and tutored. Both teenagers and adults will work if they are physically able and will be encouraged to do community service. There will be volunteers from the community who will assist and “God will provide The Second Chance Homes with more than enough.” Many people, both young and old, will want to help The Second Chance Homes because they are serving God’s children.

*The Second Chance Foundation and Second Chance Homes can also be incorporated into one complex inclusive of the four facilities. The complex could have a separate sanctuary, recreational/gym facility, private conference rooms for lectures and incoming speakers, and/or additional areas of “extended family” outreach that these homes will require. Whether it is one home, four homes, or an entire community, HIV/AIDS children and adults will have a quality loving place to live.

No need will go unattended to in The Second Chance Home. As we grow, so will our situations, issues, and challenges. As these circumstances present themselves, they will be addressed by the appropriate people who understand that these homes are for those who will be given the opportunity to shine with the brilliance of the most beautiful star that God ever created. Second Chance Homes will be God’s Homes because there will be love, hope, faith, and family under one roof loving life, living life, and being grateful for life. These are the purposes of Second Chance Homes and the vision of Mrs. Susan Lee Mintz.
